Oktoberfest’s Bona Fide Beer Bonaza

  • By Khoo Yong Hao

With Oktoberfest looming, one can expect a relentless beer assault on restaurant beverage menus. But while everyone’s favourite alcohol is a staple for celebrations, how many establishments can truly pride themselves in authentically welcoming the Bavarian tradition on Singaporean soil? Here, we have handpicked some bona fide experiences that provide not only splendid beers, but also customary German rites and rituals in honour of this year’s Oktoberfest.

Back for a sixth time in 2018, Oktoberfest Asia brings the annual Wiesn to Singapore in true German fashion. Hosted at Tan Quee Lan Street, an air-conditioned marquee awaits those who long for the buzz of beer. Expect only the finest brews from Paulaner Bräuhaus and Weihenstephaner, quality brewhouses with centuries of heritage behind them, as well as hearty platters of bratwurst and other German delights. Linger long enough and you’ll find yourself grooving along to the upbeat sounds by the Rock Oompahs, a rock band flown in straight from the birthplace of Oktoberfest.

We weren’t kidding when we said the Munich brewhouse meant business when it comes to beer. With 375 years of experience under their belt dealing with barley malt and hops, one can get their alcohol fix with any of the establishment’s home-brews. The Paulaner Bräuhaus Helles is a perpetual hit year round (pleasantly malty with subtle notes of hop), while the Weissbier entices with its fruity and lightly bitter flavour. The Munich Bräuhaus-Brezn, more commonly known as “the pretzel”, is a great complement to go along with the beverages. The restaurant also practices the philosophy of gemütlichkeit, which translates to the warm and cozy atmosphere that makes people feel comfortable, so it’ll be like dining in a cozy, true-blue German abode.

If drowning yourself in pint after pint of beer isn’t really your cup of tea, then head over to Pan Pacific Singapore to satisfy the carnivore within. This Friday and Saturday, gorge yourself with a delectable spread of Bavarian-inspired sausages and a variety of meats at the hotel’s Poolside Patio. Promising dishes from the live barbecue station include playful renditions of German sausages – pork jalapeño sausage, Emmentaler cheese sausage, pork garlic sausage – but the original pork Bratwurst sits proudly on its meaty throne. If you must, beers from Paulaner Bräuhaus (yes, them again) are available as well to fill your seemingly bottomless beer belly.
