Moncler Partners with Off-White for FW16

  • By Chelsea Tan

As with every season where brands scramble to offer something fresh, Moncler is no different. Rather than sticking to the formula of conceiving something novel in-house, however, Moncler looks outside the label this season and hands the reins to creative director-cum-architect Virgil Abloh of Off-White. The offspring goes by the name of Moncler O.

In sum, Moncler O is an actual Fall/Winter collection that can be worn in sub-zero temperatures without running the risk of hypothermia (finally). Drawing inspiration from the fishermen of the Northern seas, long jackets and puffer coats abound to counter frigid conditions. Anoraks (with multiple pockets!) play on classic waxed sailing jackets, while double-waterproof cotton oversized trousers and pure heavy woollen garments rise up to the freezing challenge. In a contribution to the ongoing form-meets-style conversation, the materials used are mainly rubberised to combat the weather, while prints featuring stormy skies add a touch of effortless cool.

Of course, as when brands collaborate, the looks feature a mix of aesthetic codes, most obviously evident in the recurring diagonal stripes (dubbed the leitmotiv) of Abloh hallmark, and Moncler’s logo in bright yellow silicon. It’s a collection that can brave the storms with you, and when summer arrives, you can ditch the down jackets in favour of a T-shirt (yes, that one peeking out under all those layers). But for now, winter is coming.
