Comme des Garçons
When Rei Kawakubo sought divine inspiration from her 1981 Paris debut branded ‘Hiroshima Chic’, who would’ve thought she’d produce a Lovecraftian horror show. Holes were the main event – carefully stitched into jackets, sweaters and shoes, or in some cases revealing frayed edges of jacket lining. Dysfunctional zippers created even more voids, spilling the voluminous frills of shirts underneath. Then, there’s the Cthulhu hair – a supernatural situation all on its own, courtesy of Julien d’Ys. Despite the horror-heavy context, there’s still a cosmic beauty to be held – sure, we could easily create holes in our own outfits, but it wouldn’t have the consecrated touch of Kawakubo.
