The inspiration may be from the prima ballerinas of the English National Ballet whom master perfumer Alberto Morillas went backstage to observe, but Penhaligon’s Iris Prima is anything but delicate and femme. The unisex fragrance is surprisingly raw and animalistic, yet maintaining the structured elegance that defines ballet. Part of his research involves sniffing garments used by the ballerinas, which give rise to the intimate and musky base of sandalwood, vetiver and benzoin sweetened with vanilla. It opens like a performance – bergamot, green amber and sparkling pink pepper capture of the graceful opening act and melts into the crescendo of mid-act: jasmine sambac, hedione and paridisione.
