Single In The City

  • By Men's Folio

Bars are the best thing to happen to single folks and especially during the mating season, when there’s plenty of  love to go around. Bars like Loof Rooftop Bar will be bringing back their successful Lovestruck night this February (in collaboration with similarly named dating agency) to stir up romance in the city. This month when everything seems to cater to couples, here’s a sanctuary for us singles.

Relationships, like radioactivity, go through exponential decay anyway. The longer you’re in a relationship, the fewer incidences of sexual intercourse you’ll be having with your significant other. There’s nothing wrong with having fun while you can, so why not dip your toes in as many pools before settling down?

Forget encounters of the tech kind; if, like me, you’re a New Age spiritualist who needs to know if your potential fling’s aura harmonises with yours before diving in the deep end, then press and hold on the hook-up apps in your phone till it wiggles and tap the ‘x’ to delete. Retromania is so in right now, and that applies to the old fashioned way of meeting people – the traditional channels are so much better. To assist you in your quest for a potential mate (or victim), I’ve rallied my editorial friends from various publications to take a poll on which sports are best for you to mingle when you’re single.

L’aigon

69 Neil Road, Tel: 6220 0369

The ultra-plush cocktail bar’s trendy quota is further boosted by the man behind it all, Monsieur Pierre- Emmanuel Plassart: a fashion photographer, director (in Paris and Los Angeles, which makes him doubly legit), French (anything French is amazing) and is the great-grandson of Guillame Plassart (who sold his supermarket chains for billions of euros) – that just ups his chicness by a billion points.

PS. Café

45 Ann Siang Road, Tel: 02-02

The first Thursday of every month, expect throngs of beautiful people in beautiful outfits rubbing elbows (and well-toned biceps) with each other. Two friends who went reported that the night they went was peppered with those in the natural resources sector: there’s no money like oil money.

The Spiffy Dapper

61 Boat Quay, Tel: 8233 9810

Highly recommended if you are looking for a “quality crowd” (read: good-looking people with money sans the pretentiousness). I love it because they did a mean cocktail for Men’s Folio last Augusut using Benedictine’ the same “fiery” poison Anais Nin (my spirit animal) indulged in when listening to “raucous music, to see faces, to brush against bodies” because “beautiful women and handsome men arouse fierce desires in me. I want to dance… I want to perverse people, to be intimate with them.”

Kyo

133 Cecil Street, Tel: 8299 8735

Seven out of 10 of my writer friends with active social lives (read: they’ve been around the block) mentioned Kyo as the watering hole for singles in the banking sector; perfect spot to shop for dates, special friends or army candy for social events.
