Beginning Of The Becoming Batak Sculpture From Northern Sumatra

Works are owned by Singapore-based private Mandala Foundation which has loaned some pieces for the exhibition while donating the works. More than 80 pieces will be on display and will bring the visitor on the journey of the Batak people who migrated to South-East Asia from southern China or Taiwan about 6,000 years ago. They brought their beliefs along with them, which shows in the objects that were carved to represent its religion which is said to be a sort of animism and ancestor worship.Today, the Batak culture is flourishing, most notably in northern Sumatra.

1 February 2014 to 1 June 2014 at the Asian Civilisation Museum
