In a sort of déjà vu slew of happenings (Jill Sander has done it twice), Ann Demeulemeester’s departure from her namesake label has taken everyone by surprise. Besides the handwritten note, there has been no official statement as to who will take Demeulemeester’s place.

Part of the note read: “I always followed my own path. A new time is coming both for my personal life and the brand. I feel it’s time to separate our paths. Ann Demeulemeester is an adult brand now with its own identity and legacy that is able to continue growing with out me,” she wrote.

Starting her label in 1985, the fashion world branded her a member of the Antwerp Six, a band of Belgian designers (this group includes Dries Van Noten, Walter, Van  Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs and Marina Yee) who impressed with their intelligent designs through deconstructive styles. Since then, Demeulemeester has garnered a solid following who crave her avant-garde and gothic aesthetic, typically in black and white; a signature which has made some going as far as to call her the ‘poetess of twilight and shadows’.

Demeulemeester may have left the building but life still goes on. The label states that the men’s and women’s collections for Fall ’14 would be presented together at a show on February 27, 2014.

Below are looks from Ann Demeulemeester’s Spring 2014 Menswear collection:
