“The communist party was founded in this area,” says Shanghai Tang’s executive chairman, Raphael le Masne de Chermont. “It’s half past ten on a hot and humid Shanghai morning and he is standing in The Langham’s Chairman Suite. The expansive living room’s floor-to-ceiling windows provide a spectacular 180-degree view of Shnaghai’s Xin Dian Ti district, an area of reconstructed traditional houses on narrow alleyways that teem with tourists and locals who relish its shopping, dining and entertainment venues. In a street where traditional garments like ‘qipaos’ and Mao suits were historically made-to-order, it’s fitting that the pioneer Chinese luxury brand has a store just a stone’s throw away, where the night before, a drunk Chinese woman was spotted trying to wrench open its doors even though it was way past its 11pm closing time
