TREND REPORT S/S 2014: Check Up On It

  • By Men's Folio

Seeing squares? You probably will this coming Spring/Summer 2014 season. Sure this trend may seem like a staple in the commercial sense (and a bit droll), but this time around it’s been interpreted in a much more modern and much more edgier manner. Whether they’re plaid, checkered or madras, designers find themselves in a frenzy game at a perpendicular scale.

At Phillip Lim’s namesake label, he found his muse in the so-called “accidental tourist”, taking inspiration from such stereotypes like surfers, the traveler, the camper, and mixing all these ideas out of context and out of order.  The squares in his framework evolved into blue picnic printed checkers on generously cut tops and bottoms; the relaxed attitude we’ve been seeing throughout the season.

Issey Miyake provided a more modernist approach to the squares, taking inspiration from painter Piet Mondrian. His suits and trousers found themselves in primary blues and reds with bold black strokes to articulate the right-angle of the squares; definitely for the more art-house soul.

To reiterate our point, thought the check print may be a bit too generic to classify itself as a trend, try to step out of the box and wear the prints in a variety of manner; specifically if you’re the absolute dresser who can’t associate themselves with floral print, we feel that these squares can fit the bill in your wardrobe sharply.
