With Chinese New Year just round the corner, local label Tong Tong introduces chic chinoiserie to our local sartorial landscape. Born from a mad love for Chinese material culture, the label’s Spring 2013 collection is a sampling of various traditional Asian fabrics spun into a patchwork of playful, modern separates that reflect the nation’s patchwork diversity – hence the collection’s name, Cultural Mosaic.
While the clothes certainly have their brand of ‘Singaporean-ness’ to them, they stay true to traditional Chinese design elements such as the mandarin collar, floral prints and construction methods.
So forget the ubiquitous chain stores and celebrate the festivities with Tong Tong’s modern Chinese wearables that don’t scream ‘costume’. At the very least, you’ll give your nosy relatives something else to talk about other than your ho-hum career or non-existent love life.
