A Salute to Military: Hao Yunxiang for Zara

  • By Men's Folio

A tip of the old beret is in order for one of the most enduring cyclical influences on menswear: military garb. We were browsing through Zara’s online lookbook for Fall when we came across this arresting black-and-white portrait of the handsome Hao Yunxiang, exuding quiet strength and masculinity in a perennially stylish double-breasted wool coat. The fast fashion Spanish label is (in)famous for reworking runway trends on-the-minute, and they’ve hit it right on the bull’s eye with this beautiful taupe jacket, jazzed up with just enough detailing to keep it from becoming nondescript. We love the burnished gold buttons and epaulettes, the latter having the most welcome effect of giving the illusion of broader shoulders. So yes, military-tinged raiment, like leopard prints for the ladies, are one of those curiously timeless trend pieces worth investing in (think Dior Homme and Dries van Noten’s regimented numbers for Fall 2012, which will be equally at home come 2015, we think). Our recommendation? Get this Zara item and try it on for size, before making the plunge and going high-end. Stomach in, chest out!
