#MFMF120: Deanna Dzulkifli Presents Dea's Boogie

Instead of featuring just the Men’s Folio team’s weekly playlists (you can catch up here), however, we’ve opened up the column to friends, industry mates, and people who we think have the right groove.

This week, we invite independent producer Deanna Dzulkifli, an independent producer who has run programmes for Art SG, Dance Nucleus and The Observatory, and works with forms that range from dance, performance art to visual arts and music. to curate a playlist of her favourite tracks to boogie to. Read here for a short introduction to her generous and careful curation:

“I have a really short attention span, so sometimes when I put together playlists, it really depends on my headspace at that point in time. Contextually, it’s been a really busy few months, work-wise. So when Charmaine had asked if I’d like to contribute a playlist for this, I was immediately drawn to contribute songs that make me move, and that also make me feel powerful. Because sometimes there’s so much other white noise in my head, with things I need to do for different projects sort of drumming on, music becomes the tool to get me into my body.”

“With my dance background, I’ve always found it extra fun to listen to the “silent beats” in a track, the negative spaces that make a part of your body respond in a type of way. For example, I find an Afro beat-based song like “Airplane Mode feat NSG” by Nines, NSG, speak more to my ankles while something like “Play” by Alewya or “SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY” by Amaarae, Moliy, speak more to my hips. I’m not sure if I sound crazy hahaha, but basically I’d like to share this playlist because I feel like it’s a selection of songs I feel move me wholly, and it’d be cool if you move too.”
