Platinum Perfection

  • By Khoo Yong Hao

As discussed before, watchmakers are no strangers to working with precious metals outside the usual spectrum of solid golds and silver, and today, platinum takes the spotlight. Revered for its highly unreactive properties, platinum is one of the most untainted metals that one can craft a watch out of, making it a dark horse in the league of precious metals. If you wish to venture into pure luxury, then read on and gawk at these platinum-infused watches, crafted by only the most prestigious of Masions.

The legendary Audemars Piguet Royal Oak makes a bold statement with its octagonal bezel and “tapisserie” dial, but the larger-than-life Royal Oak Offshore makes a bigger impression with opulent details to boot. The luxury sports timepiece crafted in full 950 platinum is to die for, fronted by a smoked blue dial and deep black chronograph counters for jealous eyes to ogle at.

The Ref. 5270 is distinguished within Patek Philippe‘s longstanding history as the first chronograph with perpetual calendar dating back to 1941. Today, the grand complication gets a new lease on life as the manufacture pays tribute to its technical finesse by introducing it in precious platinum for the first time. Adding to its glamour is a golden opaline (“salmon”) dial accentuated by blackened gold applied numerals. An overload of extravagance for sure, but welcomed one nonetheless.

As if platinum was not already rare enough, Vacheron Constantin takes it one step further by producing only 100 pieces of their masterfully crafted Traditionnelle complete calendar in the Collection Excellence Platine. The aesthetic signature of the prestigious watch is the 950 platinum attiring the case, making it gleam with unrivalled intensity. The Swiss Maison’s attention to detail is also superbly demonstrated, as the dark blue alligator leather strap is hand-stitched with the same 950 platinum and silk threads.
