Culture Mondays: The More The Merrier

  • By Marcus Li

Allegedly, Black Friday came about after retailers have been operating at a loss (in the red), only to earn a profit (in the black) on the day after Thanksgiving as holiday shoppers would spend their money on heavily discounted items. However, the real story comes from 1950s Philadelphia where law enforcers would call the day after Thanksgiving Black Friday due to the huge amount of suburban shoppers and tourists that come into the city for the big Army-Navy football game held on that Saturday every year. The resulting Long shifts, inability to take their shift off, and having to deal with shoplifters taking advantage of the huge crowd earned the name “Black Friday”. Not all times are “the more the merrier”. Today, Black Friday is mainly associated as a worldwide shopping sensation where items are heavily discounted.

At a glance, there is little similarities between Thanksgiving and Black Friday. One gives thanks for a great harvest through a feast, while the other is a shopping day. However, on closer look, both of them share the same theme – excess, an excessive feast on Thanksgiving and an excessive number of people and purchases on Black Friday. We might not be too excited about squeezing into our pants and/or between people this weekend but we sure can embrace the intrusion of the excessive holiday spirit.

Excessive clothes

During Deepavali, Men’s Folio introduced blinged out shoes. As excessive as they are, the team will be having a hard time matching this week’s selection which are outrageous in both their designs and cuts.

Opulent Watches

Some might like their watches minimal with potential to grow alongside one, others might like a more conspicuous approach. For those that subscribe to the latter, Men’s Folio will have just the right thing for them later this week.

Long Lasting Perfumes

Everybody experiences the world through their five senses and one wants to be experienced beyond just sight, a selection of Eau De Parfum has been curated to be spritz on to expand their space.

Free Flow Alcohol

As if free flow of food wasn’t enough, this week the realms of free flow alcohol with a price that won’t justify the amount one will be drinking, will be explored. A literal Black Friday steal.
