Culture Mondays: Preparing for No Shave Movember

  • By Marcus Li

No Shave November and Movember are two separate campaigns that focus on good causes. No Shave November encourages men and women to donate the money they would have otherwise spent on shaving-related products and services to the American Cancer Society; its pioneer Movember encourages participants to grow a moustache and use its mystical power to create conversations on prostate cancer, testicular cancer and male mental health and donate to those causes. What we end up with at the end of the month are glorious moustaches – viking locks of facial hair that would have been popular playboy/playgirl centrefolds in the 1970s.

The movement was so strong that it has become a meme in every sense. Here’s the grand daddy of mustaches Nick Offerman schooling you on the satirical history of moustaches.

The aim of this month is to end up with a defining lip-stache on 31 November, and everybody has to start from square one. For the entire week, we will be writing articles solely for the purpose of preparing for a no-shave November, by having a clean shave first.
