Met Gala 2018: 8 Heavenly Men Take Us to Church

  • By Rachel Ong

Wait, are we all supposed to look this done up when we arrive at heaven’s gate? That’s the question you might ask yourself after taking a quick glance at the celestial pageantry that is the Met Gala 2018. To commemorate fashion’s biggest night out (at least on the east coast), male celebrities showed up in regalia that reimagined the event’s theme – “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”.

Sartorial drama and creative theatrics are what the Met Gala lives for, essentially that one time where you can go all out as your heart desires. Given the show-stopping factor of the ball, the opulence of traditional Catholicism makes a great theme for every stylish guy to play with rich fabrics and palatial detailing. That leaves no room for a plain suit or tuxedo in this case unless the sinner wants to go for confession. Either way, we’ve decided to take a vow of silence with regards to naming names.

The religious theme is evident in the dramatic robes, crosses and crucifixes. We size up 8 male celebrities who brought us to church and made us really feel like plebians down on our knees praying in envy. Amen.

Luka Sabbat in H&M

Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute GalaLuka Sabbat shone like a celestial dark angel in an extravagant silk robe entirely hand-embroidered with sequins of silver, burgundy and gold. The model-influencer also wore tuxedo trousers made from sustainable materials organic silk, TENCEL® and wool.

Lewis Hamilton in Tommy Hilfiger

The religious symbolism was completed with a sacred heart and cross on the back of the suit.

Jaden Smith in Louis Vuitton

The upcoming rapper might have also sinned by deviating from the theme in chunky tennis shoes, white denim and a trench coat.

Migos in Atelier Versace

Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute GalaHip-hop trio Migos brought the house (or church) down with their coordinating Versace looks or to be specific, Greek-key-and-rococo tuxedos encrusted with Swarovski blings. It’s barely a surprise that the pseudo-holy trinity (Quavo, Offset, and Takeoff) are fans of the Italian house; their debut single was aptly titled “Versace”.

Jared Leto in Gucci

Heavenly Bodies: Fashion & The Catholic Imagination Costume Institute Gala - ArrivalsOur suspicions were confirmed – Jesus is alive and in the house, as portrayed by the ethereal Jared Leto in a custom Gucci blue silk moireè featuring an oversized black velvet lapel embroidered with three-eyed golden angels. The actor added a feminine touch to his masterpiece with a pink silk shirt and bow and completed the Renaissance Christlike look with an aged gold and metal crown. Can we get an Amen?

Chadwick Boseman in Atelier Versace

A dramatic cape was thrown on with bejewelled crosses in a reverent reference to the Catholic Church. The black panther, or in this case white panther, was on a papal-level fit for a king.
