Y-3 Spring/Summer 2017 Embraces The Future

  • By Shelton Chang

Ever the complex, conceptual and forward-thinking sports label, Y-3’s latest is composed of not one but four themes. The first, Future Perfect, channels monastic style with clean lines and a monochromatic palette. The second, Dimension 3, offers what Y-3 does best: utilitarian sportswear in high-tech fabrics and sharp silhouettes. Renegade, the third theme, is based on camouflage and earthy hues. Finally, Surrealism is avant-garde and reflects the warped reality of a dream. Across the four concepts, ponchos are the trophy garment, paying tribute to the experimental costuming of science fiction films.

In the footwear department, the NOCI is the season’s must-have. Inspired by trekking in space, the sneakers feature a deconstructed silhouette, and a mash up of “fragments” and different materials: TPU mesh, elastane and rubber, a lightweight cushioning EVA midsole and a cushioning sockliner. It is also available in both low and high models. So confident was Y-3 of this creation, that the brand released a limited edition version, which was snapped up immediately after the collection’s runway show.

Lawrence Midwood, the label’s senior design director, sums up the collection thus: “As a brand that is always looking to the future, the time felt right to focus on this concept and bring it to life in a bold and experimental way.”
