Weekend Agenda: 25-26 June’16

  • By Rachel Ang

Our country being the melting pot of races and religions that it is, we’re not surprised that more and more cultures and practices are being washed onto the shores of our home. And we are not complaining. How does having a gourmet coffee brewed with coffee beans from Africa sound to you? Or a plate of Penang delights, and maybe some Asian fusion goodness? This week, we hope to help you out with your weekend plans by offering three food places which will bring you all across the globe with its classic yet exotic selection for you to choose from.

Penang Culture
Changi Airport, Terminal 2, Departure/Check-in Hall, #036-087-01

Weekends are mostly for snuggling in and rest (besides catching up with the latest television drama episodes), and a six-hour odd car ride to Malaysia for some comforting Penang cuisine might sound too arduous a thought. But you shouldn’t be worrying if you are craving for a good bowl of Penang rojak or laksa this weekend, as Penang Culture brings the Penang goodness to you here in Singapore. Having planted three outlets here in this little red dot, Penang Culture has been serving a myriad of favourites from the Malaysian state for the past five years. Now, to celebrate its fifth anniversary, it has spiced up its menu with refreshing showcases of familiar Penang dishes. There is no one more familiar with the local Penang delights than head chef Wong Thin Lipp, given his rich experience as a chef in Penang. Of course, at the thought of Penang, you should try its Salmon Assam Laksa and the Premium Crab Meat and Salted Egg Fried Kway Teow. Also, give its Premium Lobster and Scallop Noodles and its Penang Fire Wings a shot and they will definitely keep you coming back for more. With Penang Culture, there is no need for a six-hour odd journey to Penang for your dose of sedap anymore.

Froth
Ascott Raffles Place Singapore, No. 2 Finlayson Green, Level 2, Singapore 049247

Shifting over from BIG Hotel, Froth presents an upgraded concept and plenty of new dishes brought into being by Chef Derrick Ow, serving up its own fusion of local flavours and western food in its 140-seater minimalist interior. Ask the amiable staff for a serving of Duck Kut Teh, unquestionably the star of the menu. This beautifully herbal superior duck broth is cooked for 12 hours and served up with thin flat strips of melon, radish and cresses for that comforting soup fix. The Hot & Cold Foie Gras is also a luxurious treat, with a classic-style pan-seared foie gras atop toasted butter brioche with pomegranates and truffle honey apple reduction on one side, and a chilled foie gras filled with apple and kiwi puree in the centre, adding a fruity dimension to the dish. Mains-wise, the Ponzu Soya Cod is beautifully flavoured with ponzu and sesame soya glaze, charred for texture and served with wasabi edamame puree, smoked mash, baby peaches and bok choy vegetables. Do yourself a favour and leave some space for the French Toast Waffles, which adds a layer of in-house French toast batter to create that crispy perfection, drizzled with condensed milk, cereal flakes, and a scoop of gourmet ice cream from a local supplier. And if that isn’t enough, treat yourself to a glass of lychee tea or the delightful speculoos (caramel cookie) milkshake. If that won’t have you leaving with a smile on your face, we’re not too sure if anything can.
