David Beckham, Mini-Mes & Posh Spice in Family Portrait

Freud would have a field day churning out a feverishly overwrought dissertation on this picture. For the rest of us, this tableau is too cute for analysis, really (or is it)—Beckham and sons grinning in Burberry, while the purse-lipped matriarch lords over her dominion of weak-willed (and ball-less?) male subjects…

Now that we’ve got that bit of bitchiness out of the way, let us all agree that this is as lovely an image of familial bliss as you will get in this paparazzi-infested times. Some context: this was shot at last night’s premiere of “Viva Forever”, a musical based on the lives and times of the Spice Girls. Let’s start with the men, shall we? David was looking his usual dapper self, clad in custom Burberry Tailoring. We adore how the 37-year-old sporting star managed to look both age- and season-appropriate in a charcoal grey suit, livened up with a suave officer green tie.

As for the boys: what can we say? The three amigos, also in Burberry Tailoring, were dressed in their father’s image while managing to retain some semblance of personal identity. Brooklyn Beckham—that’ll be the eldest—glowered with nascent teenage rebellion (look, Pa, no tie!), while Cruz’s overcoat, perhaps two sizes too big, looked like the middle child’s poignant attempt at a superhero cape. (We have nothing to say about Romeo, who is perfect in his cherubic well, perfection.)

Now for the queen bee herself. Posh Spice, who caused something of a mini-PR crisis by deigning to arrive late and missing the photocall with the rest of her erstwhile Spice-mates, was painfully stylish decked out in threads from her own (exorbitantly priced) label. Everything on her reed-thin frame was from her Spring 2013 collection, save for the androgynous Isabel Marant cigarette trousers and her Manolo Blahnik patent pumps.

We have to give it to Victoria for opting to go with this severe look—a far cry from the cartoonish costumes donned by Emma Bunton and the like on the same night—and the louche manner in which she chose to drape her burgundy wool coat over her shoulders…as if it were the pelt of a lion resting on an ancient sorceress.
